CANTILLON CANT DO WRONG

Phil Cantillon made Widnes fans nervous, not with mistakes, as there was only one (putting knees in the tackle) which cost Widnes a mere penalty, but with a scintillating performance of blistering pace to show why he would fit into any Super League side. If Widnes did one thing right this season, it would be to keep Phil on the playing staff.
Phil answered Vikings' fans' prayers after 13 minutes when he ripped through the Hunslet defence and skipped away to finally put Widnes ahead. This was after two obviously legal tries were disallowed. Firstly, Afi Leuila's try was disallowed after Liam Jones (who supplied the pass) was deemed to be offside when Birdseye kicked ahead. Then Steve Argent (denied yet again!) crossed the line with a fine piece of momentum after great support play to take Cantillon's pass. The referee judged a double movement, and the visiting fans were worried that another referee was going to ruin their day in Yorkshire.
Peter Smith got the next Widnes try 3 minutes later when Steve Gee squeezed the ball from the tackle and the winger took it to score in the corner.
With a quarter of an hour left, Phil Cantillon relieved his boredom by taking the ball from acting halfback with absolutely nothing on, raced through a gap the size of a wafer and sprinting half the length of the field.
With 9 minutes to go before the break, Dobson rolled over the line in a carbon copy of Phil Cantillon's move last week. The only difference was that this ref decided Dobson wasn't on his back.
Still, it didn't matter, because Damien Munro scored two minutes into the second half after Cantillon fed him on the blindside. Three minutes later, Paul Mansson silenced his Hunslet critics by capitalizing on poor Hawks' cover after a long Birdseye kick to go over in the corner.
Another three minutes later, Afi Leuila made up for his disallowed effort earlier on by barging through some pretty dire tacklers.
It was then that Widnes fell asleep, as they are accustomed to doing. They stopped their attacking play and allowed Craig Moore to score for Hawks.
But guess who had the last word? That man, Phil Cantillon! He took the ball himself wide out and broke the defence to dive over. After a poor kicking display from Liam Jones, Lee Birdseye was given the difficult attempt and came up with the goods.
